Measles Vaccination: Olorunda Boss Seek Residents Cooperation
The Executive Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, *Hon. Samson Folorunso Olatunde (SAMOLA)* has commence sensitization on Measles Vaccination and persuaded all residents to support the Government’s initiatives on provision of better Healthcare Services, through prevention of deadly diseases among the children.
Hon. Olatunde SAMOLA made this known during the commencement of Measles Vaccination for Children at all Primary Health Centers in Olorunda LCDA, based on the flagged-Off of the first round of Year 2022 Integrated Measles Vaccination Campaign by the Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
Olorunda Chairman who was represented by _the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for the Council,_ *Dr. Agosu Adewale* stated that the Measles vaccine is safe and very effective in preventing the deadly virus, as it produce 90 to 95 percent life-long immunity to measles.
He said that the Vaccination Campaign is scheduled to run from Friday 17th June, till Monday 4th, July 2022 across all LGAs/LCDAs in Lagos State and the main objective of this exercise is to immunise all eligible Children between age 9 months to 59 months with measles vaccine injections in the Communities and more efforts would be made by this Administration to curb the spread of measles virus and interrupt the transmission of other deadly diseases in Olorunda LCDA.
The Council Mayor described Measles as a highly contagious disease that affects children and it spread very quickly from child to child, including from infected children to healthy and well-nourished children, especially in crowded areas like homes, schools and playing ground.
Hon. SAMOLA emphasized that Measles is a very infectious disease caused by a virus and affects mostly children and its can reduces a child’s ability to fight other diseases, resulting in frequent illness, cause blindness and leads to death.
*The symptoms of measles affected children can developed high fever, cough, runny nose, sneezing, redness of eyes, loss of appetite and skin rashes that appeared allover the body and if not prevented or promptly treated, measles could lead to blindness, diarrhea, pneumonia, ear infections and even death”- he said.
He added that the Council gives free medical healthcare services to the Children, such as routine Oral Polio Vaccine with Vitamin A, will be given to Children from age 0 – 59 months and adequate treatment for Pregnants and Nursing Mothers in our standard Primary Health Centers.
All hands must be on desk, as the Community leaders and residents are urged for collective responsibilities in eradicating measles, to seek medical help for affected victims, mobilization for routine and other supplementary immunization. While re-assuring that the Measles vaccine being administered for the ongoing house-to-house immunization exercise was free, safe, effective and capable of boosting immunity of children.
“The only way to protect your children against measles and other deadly diseases is to have them immunized with the routine Vaccinations at younger ages, based on the recommendation by World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigeria’s routing immunization schedule”- he concluded.
