Towards improving hygiene in schools, Ikeja Unique Lions Club has built a block of six-room toilet facilities at African Church Primary School, Meiran, Lagos State as a humanitarian service to positively impact the lives of pupils of the school.
Speaking during the commissioning of the facility, tagged Club’s Legacy Project 2021/2022, the President of the Club, Oriyomi Adetunji said the club is committedto offering community service to the society.
“We decided this year to do a project around personal hygiene, that is why we built a toilet facility for the school. After doing the need assessment, we found out the school needed toilets and we built 6 blocks of toilets for the pupils.”
He added that the club spent about 6.5 million to erect the facility.
“ The toilets were built at minimum cost because it is purely a community project and we spend that much to bring this edifice into place.”
He said the club initially wants to build classrooms for the school but when the eventually Lions club visited the school the teachers demanded toilets as the pressing need of the pupil and the club accepted, as it is important to provide projects that are requested by the community.
Adetunji noted that an adequate plan is in place to ensure proper management of the facility.
“ The club met with the school authority and asked them to draw a plan that will ensure continued maintenance of the facility. Likewise, The Chairman of the LCDA also assures that the Local Council will add the school to the list of schools that the council monitors. Assuring that cleaner will be provided by the educational authority so that this project did not go to rot.”
He urged Nigerians to endeavour to serve the community with their talent, treasure and time.
The Head teacher of the school, Mrs. Janet Obayemi, commended Lions Club for the humanitarian gesture, saying the project is beyond expectation.
“When Lions Club came here around April and told me that they wanted to lay their hands on a project in this school. I demanded toilets because the other two schools on the premises have toilets but my school does not have any though we make use of their toilets, which cannot cater adequately for their pupils.
“We appreciate the Unique Lion Club of Ikeja for the opportunity given to the pupils to feel as if they are in a private school. This type of toilet can only be found in government prototype schools and private schools. We thank them for the job well done and I pray that God will meet them at their point of need even beyond expectation.”
The Projector Director of Ikeja Unique Lion Club, Lion Abidemi Fawehinmi, said when there is a need, there is a lion.
“The school is in dire need of toilet facilities, Imagine three primary schools in the same compound with over a thousand students managing just three toilets. One for the teachers and two for the students, which is highly unhygienic. So, we decided to build more toilets for the schools.
“We got approval from the educational board and they allocated the land to us and we started building from scratch and rounded up in two months.
